The Holy Saturday service begins outside (as weather permits) with the lighting of a fire. This fire is used to light the Paschal candle whose flame is shared from one person's handheld candle to another until the whole Church is lit by candlelight.
At this time, the Liturgy of the Word begins with as many as nine readings from the Old and New Testament. The readings tell the story of how Jesus fulfilled Scripture and saved humanity. The Gospel and the homily complete the Liturgy of the Word.
As the culmination of the OCIA and OCIC (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults/ Children) programs, the Liturgy of Baptism follows.. Catechumens, who have been preparing to enter the Church, are baptized. They along with Candidates who are completing their sacraments are confirmed.
The Mass continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Catechumens and Candidates receive their first Holy Communion as we all come to the altar. The Easter Vigil is a liturgy filled with joy and celebration..
